Training the Body, Attention, and Will for Obedience

Scroll

Most formation advice sounds right.
It just doesn't hold when life applies pressure.

Knowing the truth is not the same as being ready to obey it. When the pressure comes — fatigue, emotion, conflict, drift — something more than agreement is required.

Bāsis is a biblical framework for the whole person. It addresses the layer Scripture commands but formation systems rarely train: the present-moment intersection of identity, attention, posture, and action.

Not therapy. Not self-optimization. Whole-person formation under Christ's lordship — practiced in real time, in the body God created.

"Formation is not about waiting to feel ready. It is about becoming ready to obey in the present moment."
Derrick Ian Cobb — Bāsis, Volume One

Two Layers. One Clear Distinction.

A

Layer A

The past-pattern layer. Memories, emotional residue, old neural pathways. This is the territory of clinical work — therapy, EMDR, healing of deep wounds.

Bāsis does not work here

B

Layer B

The present-tense layer. Identity, attention, inner posture, embodied action. Where Scripture commands us to set the mind, guard the heart, and present the body.

This is where Bāsis operates

What the whole person is trained to align.

  • I

    Identity

The truth you stand under. Present-tense grounding in who you are in Christ — not a feeling, but a governing reality that directs everything beneath it.

  • II

    Inner Posture

How attention leans. Gratitude, trust, openness — the attentional stance Scripture commands the heart to hold in real time.

  • III

    Embodied Obedience

Posture, breath, motor readiness. The body is not a passenger. Physical alignment expresses and reinforces the inner order Scripture calls us to.

  • IV

    Outward Expression

Works, word, and fruit. Faithful action flowing from aligned identity — not generated by willpower, but expressed through ordered obedience.

WonderTour Consulting

For most of his life, Derrick carried a sense of wonder and fascination with the brain and body — and a growing frustration with the gap between knowing the truth and living it under pressure.

An engineer and voracious learner, he spent years testing what is actually possible in Layer B: the present-tense layer of identity, attention, posture, and obedience. Without crossing into therapeutic territory. Without requiring conditions that rarely arrive.

Bāsis is the result of that work — a way to integrate biblical identity, embodied attention, and practical obedience so that the ordinary Christian life can be lived with greater steadiness, clarity, and faithful action.

He is also the host of the WonderTour Podcast, exploring leadership and formation through the lens of story.
